Soria Parador

Lovely views of the city from our room

Soria was our first overnight stop on the latest trip to Spain.  It is a fairly quick drive from Madrid, barring any crazy hail storms that keep you trapped under a highway overpass for a while!

This doesn't even begin to show the hail that piled up while we waited

We stayed at Soria's Parador, a modern property that sits at the edge of town, high on a hill overlooking the Duero River.  Our room had a marvelous sunroom with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city and the river, as well as the distant hills.

The room was spacious, with a couple of chairs and small table, desk, mini-bar, and nice bathroom.  The heavy curtains definitely helped shut out the 10:30 pm daylight so we could get some much-needed rest.

We had breakfast at the hotel in the morning, and it was, of course, quite yummy.  As always, the fresh orange juice was most welcome!

The property is set up on a hill next to a ruin.  Lots of locals walked the hill up to the park and surrounding area.  I can't blame them -- it was a really pleasant place to stroll!  After breakfast, we wandered the immediate area and took in the lovely scenery.  The views over the river valley were super, and the rose-covered walls and lovely tree-lined lanes were quite picturesque.  There is a castle ruin just off of the park that encloses a pool.

A pool (though empty) inside the walls of an old ruin?  Yes, please!

The views of the city of Soria from the park are lovely

After wandering for a bit, we went down to explore the riverside area, as well as the monastic cloisters and, eventually, the San Saturio Monastery.  The view of the Parador at the top of the hill was terrific from the river, especially with the old bridge.

Another post to come with more images of Soria and surrounding sights.

I'll end the post with a layout, looking up at the Parador on the hilltop, with the old bridge crossing the Duero River.

If you are visiting Soria, Spain, I recommend staying at the Parador.  It is a lovely property!
