Old Salem

Old Salem is an historic village located right in the heart of Winston-Salem, NC.  Founded by Moravian settlers, the buildings are old, re-created, or restored.  The lovely brick sidewalks and tree-lined streets are a picture-perfect setting on a late summer day!

The village has several shops featuring folk art, ornaments (including Moravian Stars), books, cards, and pottery.  Don't miss the bakery (hint:  the Moravian Sugar Cake is a must).

I could have spent quite a bit of money on pieces of beautiful North Carolina pottery and other crafts.

Old Salem abuts the gorgeous campus of Salem College, founded in 1766, the oldest woman's college in the nation!

Reenactors walk the street in period dress, and you can dine on local fare in the Old Tavern, served by staff in costume.

I felt like I was in Williamsburg, VA, or had stepped back in time (ignoring the cars, of course).  It is both a peaceful place and a beautiful time-capsule of a village.  A lovely juxtaposition is looking up to see the skyscrapers in downtown Winston-Salem, just blocks away.

I didn't get the opportunity to stroll the gardens (hopefully a future visit) but would love to go back one day and do just that.
